Focus on Jesus

We all need a lift at times. And often our hearts lift when our perspective shifts. When we focus on ourselves, we become overwhelmed by the mess that is within us. But when we focus on Jesus, he quiets the storm within us.

And we all with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” – 2 Corinthians 3:18

This is what I call a “face lift”. As this verse suggests, when we look at Jesus, we change. We don’t just change into good people, we transform into Christ-likeness. Often, the problems around us magnify the problems within us, but when we look to Jesus the problems within us begin to disappear – even if the problems around us do not.

Isaiah 57:15 offers comfort to me. It says, “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.”’ – Isaiah 57:15

First we see that God inhabits a high and Holy place – eternity. He exists beyond comprehensible existence, and beyond comprehensible holiness. But then we see that He also dwells with the person who has a contrite and lowly spirit – someone who is humble, broken, and unworthy of praise. He does this for this reason: to revive the lowly of spirit – to revive the heart of the contrite. The high and holy God walks with low and humble people.

Friends, if your heart is broken today, if you’ve lost hope for someone (including yourself), if your heart is sad… know that a very holy God has come down to walk with you. When we see how exalted Jesus is, we realize how great His love is to be with us.

He is a God that is performing the power of the gospel in our hearts everyday – bringing us from death to life continually! Look to Him! Trust Him! He is faithful!

Peter
