Two and a Half Years of Prayers
“Holy Spirit, make me a witness of Jesus.”
“Holy Spirit, I pray that you would come upon me and make me see Jesus.”
“Holy Spirit, I pray that you would give me new spiritual sight.”
“Holy Spirit, thank you that you reveal Jesus.”
“Holy Spirit, give my heart new eyes.”
Two and a half years ago my theology of the Holy Spirit was strengthened when I discovered that He descended upon Jesus and remained, and that when He comes upon Jesus’ disciples, He makes them witnesses of Jesus. (John 1:32, Acts 1:8)
If the Holy Spirit is upon Jesus, and the Holy Spirit comes upon me, then He can plunge me into the revelation of Jesus.
John’s description of John the Baptist’s purpose brings greater clarity; he came as a witness to bear witness. (John 1:6-7) Christian witnesses are not “sayers” first. No, they are first seers.
Seeing Jesus is essential to the Christian life.
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2Cor 3:18)
The Holy Spirit unveils our eyes to behold Jesus. When we see Jesus we become like Jesus.
My Deepest, Most Consistent Prayer
Friends, my deepest most consistent prayer of the last two and a half years has been; Holy Spirit, make me see Jesus, plunge me into the revelation of the living King. That I might see Him, know Him, and become like Him.
New Eyes = New Sight
Today I receive cataract surgery. A cloudy lens is being removed from my body and a new, clear one is being put in. The veil of the cataract is being pulled back. New sight is being given to me. But it is coming at a price. New life costs a price.
Jesus Paid the Price for Us to See Him
Kindred, Jesus paid the price for us to see Him. He made himself known to us. He paid the penalty for our blinded eyes. And He sent the Holy Spirit to remove the scales from our eyes so that we could see Him, believe upon Him, and be made new.
I began reading Tony Reinke’s biography of John Newton last week and in the forward John Piper writes that his prayer for the book is that God would do eye surgery on the heart of the reader. That’s what John Newton did by the Holy Spirit in his writing. That’s what Tony Reinke did in capturing John Newton’s writing. And it’s all because, that’s what the Holy Spirit does. He performs eye surgery on the heart, so that the Christian heart can see Christ more clearly.
May this cataract surgery be symbolic, and may the Holy Spirit give me blood-bought eyes to see the risen King.
I pray for you too, that the Holy Spirit will come upon you and reveal Jesus. So that you will have new eyes to see Jesus and that the blinders will be removed from your spiritual eyes.
